For circuits with small output current, such as control circuits, capacitance filter is generally suitable. For the circuit with large output current, the effect of inductive filter is good. For circuits that require less ripple in DC voltage, such as high precision regulated power supply, capacitance and inductance filter is often used.
The output voltage of capacitor filter is higher. The maximum value can be close to the amplitude of the pulse voltage after rectification. When using inductive filter, the output voltage can be close to the average value of the pulse voltage after rectification. When the R and inductance are large enough, the output voltage ripple is smaller.
